Many people throughout history have told stories about strange spirits that visit during sleep. One famous figure from these stories is the incubus. An incubus is described as a male demon that appears in the dreams of women. The female version of this spirit is called a succubus. Some folklore says that these spirits can have children with humans. These half-human, half-demon children are called cambions. A famous legend says the magician Merlin was actually a cambion.

These legends often describe a very specific way the spirits act. The stories say the incubus seeks to form a bond through repeated visits. In some tales, this connection can cause a person's health to fade away. If the visits continue for a long time, the person might even die. This idea was used in the past to explain why someone felt very sick or tired. Some people even thought these spirits were responsible for certain crimes. They believed the spirits might be used as an excuse for bad actions.

Stories about these beings are found in many different parts of the world. In Brazil, people tell of the boto, which is a river dolphin. The legend says the boto can change into a handsome man to trick women. In Sweden, a spirit called the mare is said to ride on people's chests. In Turkey, a spirit known as Karabasan is thought to weigh down sleepers. In Ukraine, the perelesnyk might appear as a young man or even a dragon. Each culture has its own unique way of describing these nighttime visitors.

We can find very old mentions of these ideas in ancient history. The word incubus comes from Latin words meaning "to lie upon." Some of the earliest stories come from Mesopotamia around 2400 BC. The Sumerian King List mentions a figure named Lilu who was the father of Gilgamesh. There were also other spirits like Ardat lili and Idlu lili in those accounts. These were originally thought to be storm demons before they became night demons. These old records show that people have wondered about these spirits for thousands of years.

Today, scientists have different ways to explain these mysterious experiences. They believe these stories might be linked to something called sleep paralysis. This is a real thing that happens when a person cannot move or wake up. During sleep paralysis, people often feel a heavy weight on their chest. They might also see or hear things that are not actually there. These are called hallucinations, and they can feel very real and vivid. These natural sleep experiences likely helped create the many legends we know today.
