Street photography is a special way of taking pictures to capture real life.

Artists look for chance encounters and random moments in public places. They want to find a "decisive moment" where everything looks just right. This means the timing and the way the picture is framed come together perfectly. While many street photos show people, they do not always have to. A photo of an object or a building can still feel human.

Some photographers even work like reporters to record important news or social life. This kind of work can sometimes raise questions about privacy and laws.

Making these photos requires careful skill and very good timing. Many photographers use small, portable cameras to move through busy crowds easily.

In the past, some people even used hidden cameras to take unposed pictures. For example, Walker Evans used a 35 mm camera strapped to his chest under his coat. He did this to capture people in the New York City Subway without them noticing. This method helped him record people as they moved into his view. Other artists, like Helen Levitt, focused on the small details of life. She took pictures of children and their chalk drawings on New York streets.

People have been making art about everyday life for a very long time. This started with ancient art in Egypt and Sumer. Later, painters in the Renaissance and Impressionist periods also painted street scenes. Photography followed these traditions as soon as the technology was ready. In 1838, Louis Daguerre took one of the first photos of people in a street. He took the picture from his studio window in Paris. Because the street was usually full of moving people, they appeared blurry. Only one man stayed still long enough to be seen clearly. He was having his boots brushed at about 8:00 am.

New tools helped street photography grow during the 1900s. The Leica camera was first sold in 1925 and used 35 mm film. Its small size helped photographers capture fleeting moments in the city. In the 1930s, a group called Mass-Observation tried to record daily life in Britain. They even studied how people felt about changes in their leaders. In France, the "Humanist School" photographers used small cameras to show life in Paris. They often worked in black-and-white using only the light available to them. Between 1946 and 1957, a group called Le Groupe des XV showed this work every year.

Different photographers have very different ways of seeing the world. Henri Cartier-Bresson is famous for his idea of the "decisive moment." He believed that vision and composition should merge into one perfect whole. However, Robert Frank took a different path with his 1958 book, "The Americans." His photos were sometimes raw or even out of focus. He wanted to show his own personal view rather than following old rules. This helped change how people thought about what photography could say. Other photographers, like Garry Winogrand, later defined street photography as a specific attitude. He and others helped make New York City a major place for this art.
