People found his photos fascinating and important. He helped make the hard parts of city life familiar to everyone.

To get his shots, Weegee had a very specific way of working. He often worked at night to find stories. In 1938, he became the only freelance photographer with a police-band radio. This allowed him to listen to news as it happened. He would race to the scene to beat the police there. He used a Speed Graphic camera for his work. He usually set the focus to ten feet away. This helped him take pictures of people from head to toe. He also used bright flashbulbs to light up the dark streets.

Weegee's journey began far away from New York. He was born in Złoczów, which is now Zolochiv in Ukraine. At that time, it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His family moved to New York in 1909. His father, Bernard Fellig, had moved there first in 1908. The family traveled on a steamship called the Kaiserin Auguste Victoria. Once they arrived, they settled in Brooklyn. As a young man, he worked many odd jobs. He even took photos of children while riding a pony.

His career grew from small jobs into big fame. He worked as a technician at Acme Newspictures starting in 1924. By 1935, he decided to work for himself as a freelancer. He would go to police headquarters to find news. He sold his striking images to tabloids like the Daily News. He also worked for famous magazines like Life and Vogue. In 1943, the Museum of Modern Art acquired five of his photos.

He later traveled to Europe to work for the London Daily Mirror.

Weegee's influence can still be seen in art and movies today. He worked in the film industry as an actor and consultant. He helped the director Stanley Kubrick with the film Dr. Strangelove. He also experimented with strange photography using prisms and plastic lenses. One famous photo showed a distorted face of Marilyn Monroe. His style of photographing street life helped inspire other artists like Diane Arbus. Many museums still hold his huge collection of 16,000 photographs. His life and work continue to be studied by people all over the world.
