A stop sign tells drivers they must come to a full stop.

Drivers must check that the road is clear. They must look for other cars and people. This helps keep everyone safe at crossings.

Most stop signs are red with eight sides. This shape is called an octagon.

The octagon shape is very helpful. If a driver sees the back of the sign, they still know it is a stop sign. This helps them see it at night.

In the past, signs were a different color.

Between 1924 and 1954, many signs were yellow. This was because red color did not last long in the sun. Later, signs changed to red. This was to match red traffic lights.

Signs look different in other places.

In Japan, the sign is a red triangle. In France, some signs are circles. Some signs even have flashing lights. These lights help drivers see the sign more easily.
