Stop sign

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A stop sign is a very important traffic sign. It tells drivers they must come to a complete stop. Drivers must check the intersection before they move again. They must make sure the path is clear of other vehicles. They also look for pedestrians, who are people walking. This helps keep everyone safe at railroad crossings and street corners.

Many stop signs use a specific shape called an octagon. An octagon is a shape with eight sides. This shape is very helpful for drivers. If a driver sees the back of the sign, they still know it is a stop sign. This helps prevent confusion with other road signs. The shape also helps people see the sign at night.

People first created the stop sign in 1914. A Detroit police sergeant named Harold Jackson made it. He was working as a traffic guard at a busy intersection. One street had a turn that was hard to see. He used a piece of plywood and cut off the corners. He wrote the word STOP in the center. This helped traffic flow much better.

Stop signs have changed a lot over time. Between 1924 and 1954, many signs were yellow. This was because red materials did not last long in the sun. In 1954, the rules changed to use white letters on a red field. This matched the color of red traffic lights. The United Nations helped set rules for signs in 1968. This was called the Vienna Convention.

Stop signs look different depending on where you live. In Japan, the sign is an inverted red triangle.

In France, some signs are circles. In Canada, signs might use different languages. For example, signs in Quebec often use the word arrêt. Some signs even have flashing LEDs around the edges. These lights help reduce crashes by making the sign easier to see.
