These spots help people stay safe from cars and trucks. Some crossings have black and white stripes on the road.

We call these zebra crossings. They look like the stripes on a zebra animal. In some places, people must use these marked spots. If they cross elsewhere, it might be called jaywalking.

Some crossings use traffic lights to control movement.

A pelican crossing uses signals to keep walkers together. This helps drivers see them clearly. Other crossings let cyclists use them too. These are called toucan crossings.

The first signal was made in London in 1868. An engineer named John Peake Knight designed it. It used gas lanterns and moving arms. A police officer moved the arms by hand. Later, in 1951, the first striped zebra crossing was marked in Slough. Today, engineers use math to decide where to put crossings. They look at how many people and cars use the road.
