A pedestrian zone is a place for people on foot.

Most cars and trucks are not allowed there. Some zones also allow bikes, skates, or scooters.

These areas help cities in many ways. They can make the air cleaner and quieter. They also help people shop and walk safely. Sometimes, these zones can make local shops more busy.

People have had this idea for a long time. In the 1800s, Paris opened covered shopping halls. These were like early versions of malls.

In 1929, a narrow street in Germany became a walking zone. This was the first modern street to do this.

Today, many cities have these zones. Some are small squares. Others are very large areas without any cars.

Some places, like Venice, have almost no motor vehicles. In 2020, many cities added more walking paths. This helped people stay apart during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also gave more room for outdoor dining.
