Terrence Stephen McQueen was a prominent American actor of the mid-20th century.

He was widely recognized for his "antihero" persona, which refers to a character who lacks traditional heroic qualities. This persona resonated deeply with the 1960s counterculture movement. Because of this unique appeal, he became a major box office draw from the late 1950s through the mid-1970s. Many fans and the media nicknamed him the "King of Cool." His popularity was so immense that he became the world's highest-paid movie star in 1974.

McQueen's journey to stardom was marked by significant personal challenges and diverse life experiences. Born in 1930 in Indiana, he faced a difficult childhood after his father left the family. He struggled with dyslexia and partial deafness caused by a childhood ear infection. These obstacles made school very difficult for him. He spent time living on the streets at age nine and later worked many different jobs. He worked as a lumberjack in Canada and a carnival worker in Texas. These varied experiences helped shape the rugged identity he later brought to the screen.

Before entering the film industry, McQueen served in the United States Marines. He enlisted in 1947 and was stationed at Parris Island, South Carolina. Although he initially struggled with military discipline, he eventually found focus. During an Arctic exercise, he demonstrated remarkable bravery by saving five fellow Marines. He pulled them from a tank before it broke through the ice into the sea. He later served on the honor guard for the USS Williamsburg, which was the presidential yacht of Harry S. Truman. He received an honorable discharge in 1950.

McQueen began his professional acting training in New York City during the early 1950s. He studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse and HB Studio under teachers like Uta Hagen and Stella Adler. He even made his Broadway debut in the 1955 play "A Hatful of Rain." While studying, he also pursued his passion for speed. He competed in motorcycle races at the Long Island City Raceway. He often used the alias "Harvey Mushman" for these competitions. He was a skilled racer who could win approximately $100 per weekend.

His breakout success came through television, specifically the series "Wanted: Dead or Alive."

He played a bounty hunter named Josh Randall. This role featured a unique weapon called a "Mare's Leg," which was a sawed-off .44–40 Winchester rifle. The character's mysterious and detached nature helped establish McQueen's signature style. His success on television led to significant film opportunities. In 1959, director John Sturges cast him in his first major hit, "The Magnificent Seven."

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, McQueen starred in many iconic ensemble and leading films.

Some of his most notable works include "The Great Escape" (1963) and "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968). He also starred in "Bullitt" (1968) and "Papillon" (1973). In 1966, he earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance in "The Sand Pebbles."

Despite being known for being combative with producers and directors, his high demand allowed him to negotiate the largest salaries in the industry.

McQueen's life ended following a battle with terminal cancer. In October 1980, he traveled to Mexico for surgery to address tumors in his neck and abdomen. He chose this path despite warnings from U.S. doctors. The doctors had advised him that the cancer was inoperable and that his heart might not survive the procedure. He checked into a hospital in Ciudad Juárez using a fake name so the staff would not know his identity. Sadly, he died of a heart attack a few hours after the surgery at the age of 50.
