He was a dominant force in the film industry for many years. This success made him a household name across the United States.

Before his acting career, Reynolds was a dedicated athlete. He played football for Florida State University as a member of the Seminoles. Acting began as a result of a chance encounter in a classroom. While attending Palm Beach Junior College in 1956, Reynolds took an English class. His instructor, Watson B. Duncan III, became a vital mentor to him. Duncan encouraged Reynolds to participate in a school play titled *Outward Bound*. Reynolds performed a leading role and won a best actor award at the 1956 drama awards. This moment shifted his focus from sports toward the performing arts. He later moved to New York City to study more advanced acting techniques.

Reynolds's early professional years involved a variety of roles and jobs. He worked as a dockworker, a dishwasher, and a bouncer to support himself. He gained early television experience in shows like *Riverboat*, where he played Ben Frazer. He also had a significant role as the blacksmith Quint Asper on the popular series *Gunsmoke*.
