He was recognized for his brawny physique and granite-like facial features. Bronson was born Charles Dennis Buchinsky on November 3, 1921. He grew up in Ehrenfeld, Pennsylvania, a coal mining town. His family lived in extreme poverty in the Allegheny Mountains. He was the 11th child in a large family of 15. They lived in a cold-water shack near coal car tracks.

Life in the mining region was very difficult for the Buchinsky family. Bronson's father was a Lipka Tatar miner from Lithuania. His father died of cancer in 1933 when Charles was young. Following this loss, Charles began working in the coal mines. He worked in the mining office and then in the mines. He earned one dollar for every ton of coal he mined. He often worked double shifts to earn $1.00 a week. He and his brother performed dangerous work removing fossilized tree stumps. These stumps were known as Kettlebottoms. They were embedded in the roofs of mines. Removing them was risky because they caused roof falls and fatalities.

Bronson's life changed when he joined the military during World War II. In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces. He served in the 760th Flexible Gunnery Training Squadron. By 1945, he was an aerial gunner on a Boeing B-29 Superfortress. He was part of the 61st Bombardment Squadron. This group flew combat missions against the Japanese home islands from Guam. Bronson flew 25 missions during the war. He received a Purple Heart for wounds he sustained in battle. After the war, he worked odd jobs before finding acting work.

His path to stardom involved several name changes and training steps. He first worked painting scenery for a theatrical group in Philadelphia. Later, he moved to Hollywood to attend the Pasadena Playhouse. He initially used his birth name, Charles Buchinsky, for his early roles. This included an uncredited role as a sailor in the 1951 film You're in the Navy Now. In 1954, his agent suggested he change his surname to Bronson. This was done to avoid problems during the Red Scare. At the time, a Russian surname might have hurt his career.

The film was a major success despite early criticism. He often worked with director Michael Winner on films like The Mechanic. He also collaborated with director J. Lee Thompson on several projects.

Bronson continued to act in various genres until his retirement in the late 1990s. While known for action, he sometimes acted against type in television films.
