His career spanned 45 years of constant work. He appeared in over 70 films throughout his life. He also made 100 appearances on television. Coburn was famous for his work in action films. He was also a staple of the Western genre. During the New Hollywood era, he became a symbol of "cool." This image helped him reach massive popularity.

Coburn's journey into acting began with small, specific tasks. His first television appearance was in 1953 on Four Star Playhouse. He gained attention through a Remington Products razor commercial. In this advertisement, he shaved 11 days of beard growth in under 60 seconds. He used humor by noting he had more teeth to show than other candidates. He later studied acting at Los Angeles City College. There, he studied under Stella Adler with Jeff Corey. He eventually made his stage debut in the play Billy Budd.

His film career moved through several distinct stages. First, he worked as a television guest star. He appeared on shows like Bonanza, Laramie, and Tales of Wells Fargo. He also played the character Butch Cassidy in a 1958 broadcast. Next, he moved into major film roles. His breakthrough came in the 1960 film The Magnificent Seven. He played a knife-wielding character named Britt. He was hired for this role because of a recommendation from Robert Vaughn.

As his fame grew, Coburn entered a period of stardom. In 1966, he starred in the James Bond parody Our Man Flint. He played the super agent Derek Flint. This role made him a major box office success. He followed this with the sequel, In Like Flint, in 1967. Producer Saul David noted his unique look. He described Coburn as a mix of Humphrey Bogart and Jean Paul Belmondo. He believed Coburn's charm appealed greatly to women filmgoers.

Coburn also navigated a career as a supporting actor. He appeared in war films like Hell Is for Heroes and The Great Escape. In the 1963 film Charade, he played a villain. He also played a one-armed Indian tracker in Major Dundee. Later in his career, he moved into different types of roles. He appeared in the horror-anthology series Darkroom. He even had a role in the PC video game C.E.O. Despite his success, severe rheumatoid arthritis limited his later film work.

His professional life included many notable achievements and numbers. In 1967, he was voted the 12th-biggest star in Hollywood. By 1973, he was ranked as the 23rd-most popular star. He won an Academy Award in 1998 for his role in Affliction. This award recognized his performance as Glen Whitehouse. He also earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 2002. This nomination was for producing the miniseries The Mists of Avalon.

Coburn's life extended far beyond the movie set. He held several unique business interests and passions. He served as a spokesman for Schlitz Brewing Company. He was paid $500,000 to say only two words: "Schlitz Light." In Japan, he became an icon for a leading cigarette brand. He also exported rare automobiles to Japan to support himself. He held a deep interest in Zen and Tibetan Buddhism. He collected sacred Buddhist artwork and narrated a film about the 16th Karmapa.
