His career was defined by high-energy performances and a reputation for a hedonistic personal life.

Flynn's journey to stardom followed a specific path from Australia to the United States. He began his acting career in Australia, appearing in the 1933 film In the Wake of the Bounty. This role led him to travel to Britain to pursue professional training. He worked with the Northampton Repertory Company for seven months to hone his craft.

After being cast in a Warner Bros. production in London, he was recommended to executives in Hollywood. He moved to Los Angeles and initially accepted very small roles. He appeared as a corpse in The Case of the Curious Bride in 1935. Eventually, his screen tests proved he was ready for much larger responsibilities.

His rise to leading-man status was driven by the massive success of Captain Blood in 1935.

Warner Bros. had originally considered other actors like Robert Donat or James Cagney for the role. However, Flynn's impressive screen tests secured him the lead opposite Olivia de Havilland. The film was a significant financial success for the studio. It cost $1.242 million to produce and earned $1.357 million in the United States. It also earned $1.733 million in overseas markets. This profit established Flynn as a major Hollywood star.

Flynn's filmography included several distinct types of heroic roles. He became a staple of the swashbuckler genre with films like The Charge of the Light Brigade in 1936.

He also transitioned into Western roles in movies such as Dodge City, Virginia City, and San Antonio. In 1937, he attempted a different direction by playing a doctor in the film Green Light. He also starred in modern comedies like The Perfect Specimen. Even within his dramatic work, he showed range in films like The Dawn Patrol, which focused on the burdens of World War I pilots.

Perhaps his most iconic role was playing the title character in The Adventures of Robin Hood in 1938.

This production was a milestone for Warner Bros. as it was their first large-budget color film using the three-strip Technicolor process. The film had a budget of $2.47 million, the highest for the studio at that time. It grossed $2.343 million in the U.S. and $2.495 million overseas. The film's quality was so high that the United States Library of Congress selected it for preservation. Critics praised Flynn for his ability to thrill audiences as a legendary hero.

Flynn's life outside of acting was as active as his film career. He was a skilled sailor and published an autobiography titled Beam Ends in 1937. This book detailed his experiences sailing around Australia during his youth. In 1937, he also traveled to Spain to serve as a war correspondent during the Spanish Civil War. He showed sympathy for the Republican side during this conflict. His personal life was often a subject of public interest due to his reputation as a womanizer. These varied experiences contributed to the dashing persona he projected on screen.

Errol Flynn's legacy remains connected to the history of the motion picture industry. In 1960, he was posthumously awarded two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
