Many people called him the "King of Cool" because of his style. He was known for playing tough characters who did not always follow the rules. These roles helped him become a top name in movies from the late 1950s to the mid-1970s. He was so popular that he became the highest-paid movie star in 1974. Even though he sometimes argued with directors, people always wanted to hire him.

His path to fame was not easy because his early life was quite hard. He grew up in Indiana and Missouri after his father left.

He struggled in school because he was dyslexic and had trouble hearing. He even lived on the streets for a short time when he was nine. Later, he worked many jobs like a lumberjack and a carnival worker. He eventually moved to New York to study acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse.

Before he was an actor, McQueen served in the U.S. Marines. He joined the military in 1947 and was sent to South Carolina. He worked in an armored unit and even served on a presidential yacht. During an exercise in the Arctic, he showed great bravery. He pulled five other Marines out of a tank before it fell through the ice. This experience helped him grow into a mature man. He was honorably discharged from the service in 1950.

McQueen's acting career included many famous movies and TV shows. He became a household name on the show "Wanted: Dead or Alive." In that show, he played a bounty hunter named Josh Randall.
