Stepsibling

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Step-siblings are children from two different families. They become a family when their parents marry. For example, Ben and Agatha might marry. If they have sons named Charles and David, they are step-siblings. A boy is a stepbrother. A girl is a stepsister. People sometimes use the short name "stepsibs." This bond is made by law. It is not a blood relation.

Many old fairy tales use step-families. In stories like Cinderella, the stepsisters are mean. But other stories are different. In the story Kate Crackernuts, the stepsister is loving.

TV shows often show blended families. These are families made of different parts. These families can be very large. This can cause sibling rivalry. That is when children fight for attention. Some shows show children sharing rooms. They also show children learning to get along. The show The Brady Bunch is a famous example. Other shows like Phineas and Ferb also show these families. One creator chose this because it was rare on TV.
