Stepchild

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A stepchild is a child of a person's spouse. They are not the parent's own child. This is true for biological children and adopted children. Stepchildren can join a family in many ways. One way is from a past relationship. A child might come from a spouse's previous marriage. Another way is through adoption. In adoption, the child has no blood link to the parents. Some people use the term in other ways too. They may use it for a parent's partner. This is when the child does not live with that partner.

Stepchildren play a big role in a home. They are important to parents and siblings. In many homes, they are welcomed. They are treated like full members of the family. They have the same rights and jobs as other children. Sometimes, things can be hard for them. They may face challenges with parents or siblings. These children might need extra help or guidance. This help helps them feel part of the family. The National Stepfamily Resource Center studies these families.
