Adoption

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Adoption is when people take on the role of a parent. This change is permanent. It moves all rights and duties to the new parents.

In ancient Rome, adoption was a common way to rule. It helped leaders pass power to new people. This kept things peaceful.

Other cultures had different reasons. In China, boys were often adopted to help with family duties. In Hawaii, a custom called hānai let families care for children.

In Europe, many children were left at Church doors. The Church began a system to care for them. This helped them grow up without being treated unfairly.

In the 1800s, things changed in America. Many children lived in crowded homes. A man named Charles Loring Brace started the Orphan Train movement.

These trains moved 200,000 children to rural areas. At first, many children worked as servants. Later, new laws were made. These laws focused on what was best for the child. Today, adoption is a way to build loving families.
