Parents have many ways of raising children. These ways are called parenting styles. A style is the feeling or mood a parent creates.

This is different from a practice. A practice is a specific thing a parent does.

In the 1960s, Diana Baumrind studied these styles.

She found three main types. One type is called authoritative. This style uses a good balance of rules and freedom. Another type is authoritarian. This style uses many rules. The third type is permissive. These parents are very kind but do not use many rules. Later, a fourth type was added. This is the neglectful style.

Many people study how these styles help kids. Warm and kind parents help kids grow well.
