Some think this name comes from the color of their maroon sports uniforms. Others think it comes from the Afrikaans word for a buddy or mate.

The university is split into five different campuses across the Western Cape. These include the main campus in Stellenbosch and the Bellville Park Campus. There is also the Saldanha Campus for military science and the Tygerberg Campus for medicine. The Ukwanda Rural Clinical campus is another important site for health studies.

Students can study in 139 different departments. These departments are organized into 10 main faculties. They cover subjects like science, law, engineering, and even theology.

The school has a very long history that started a long time ago. It began in 1864 as the Stellenbosch Gymnasium. At first, there were only five students who finished their studies in 1870. The school grew as the government began to support education more. In 1881, it became Stellenbosch College. Later, in 1887, it was renamed Victoria College.

Finally, it received full university status on April 2, 1918.

Reaching full university status was a big goal for the school. A wealthy farmer named Jannie Marais helped make this happen. He left a large gift of money before he died in 1915. This gift helped the college reach the £100,000 needed to become a university. He also wanted Dutch and Afrikaans to have equal status to English. Because of this, many classes were taught in Afrikaans for many years.
