space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some parts of space make many stars very fast. We call this a starburst. It is a way that stars form at a high rate.

This makes stars much faster than usual. This process uses up gas very quickly. It uses the gas faster than a normal galaxy does.

Starbursts can be small or very large. They can happen in a small spot. They can also happen in a whole starburst galaxy.

The Tarantula Nebula is a small area with a high rate. Messier 82 is a whole galaxy with a high rate. In M82, gas pressure is 100 times higher than nearby. This galaxy forms stars as fast as the Milky Way. It will use its gas in 100 million years.

Starbursts can have many shapes. Messier 94 has a ring shape. Messier 82 has a round core. Starbursts often happen when galaxies merge. A merger is when two galaxies hit each other. This can make a starburst in one spot or across a whole galaxy.
