Starburst region

A starburst is a special event in space. It is a time when many stars form at once. This happens at a much higher rate than usual. Most of the time, stars form slowly. In a starburst, they form very quickly. This fast work uses up gas in space. It uses this gas much faster than a normal galaxy does.

This process works by using up gas supplies. Stars need gas to grow. A starburst uses this gas over a short time. This time is shorter than the life of a galaxy. High gas pressure often happens during a starburst. Scientists also see more hydrogen cyanide than usual. They also see more carbon monoxide emission-lines. This shows that the gas is very active.

Scientists study different types of starbursts. Some happen in small spots in space. Others happen in a whole starburst galaxy. The Tarantula Nebula is a famous example. It is in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It has one of the highest star formation rates. This is in a place called the Local Group. These spots show how much stars can grow.

There are many real numbers to know. Messier 82 is a very famous starburst galaxy. It is only about 600 parsecs across. That is about 2,000 light-years. Its gas pressure is 100 times higher than nearby areas. It forms stars as fast as our Milky Way. M82 has 200 million solar masses of hydrogen. It will use this gas in 100 million years.

Starbursts can take many different shapes. Messier 94 has an inner ring shape. Messier 82 has a round starburst core. Starbursts often happen during galaxy mergers. This is when two galaxies meet. The Antennae Galaxies are an example of this. A merger can cause a local starburst. It can also cause a whole galaxy starburst.
