Most coaches were pulled by four horses. Some versions used six horses to help. They were used before steam trains were common. This made them a very important way to move.

How did the stagecoach work on a long trip? It followed a set schedule on a regular path. The horses would get tired after traveling for a while. To keep moving, the coach stopped at stage stations. These stations were also called posts or relays. At these stops, tired horses were swapped for fresh ones. This way of moving was called staging.

A driver guided the coach. Sometimes a guard sat beside him. This guard was called a shotgun messenger. This is where the phrase "riding shotgun" comes from.

Stagecoaches have a long history in Britain. The first recorded route was in 1610. It ran from Edinburgh to Leith. By the mid-1600s, many routes existed across the island. In 1754, a company started the "Flying Coach." It traveled from Manchester to London. Later, John Palmer changed how mail was delivered. In 1784, his coach went from Bristol to London in 16 hours. Before this, the trip took 38 hours.

Making the ride better was a big job. Early rides were very bumpy and slow. Builders like Robert Hooke helped make spring-suspended coaches in the 1660s. Later, Obadiah Elliott used elliptic springs to help the ride. These were steel leaf springs attached to the axles.

New roads also helped coaches go much faster. Workers used a method called Macadam roads. These better roads helped people and mail move quickly. In 1836, a coach could travel from London to Liverpool in about 24 hours. This was much faster than in the past.

Stagecoaches changed how the world connected. They were like the buses or delivery trucks we see today. They moved people and letters between cities. However, things changed in the 1830s. The first rail delivery happened in 1830 between Liverpool and Manchester.

Trains were faster than horses. Most stagecoaches stopped working by the early 1840s. Some people still used them for fun or sport. They called these newer versions road coaches.
