A military staff is a specialized group of people who support a commander. This group includes officers, enlisted members, and even civilian workers. They work for leaders of large units, such as a division. Their main job is to help with command and control. They do this through careful planning and gathering information. They also help by sharing and supervising orders. This is very important when many complex things happen at once.

Staff members work in different functional groups to stay organized. Some groups handle administration, which is the management of paperwork and people. Others focus on logistics, which is the way supplies are moved. Some groups handle intelligence to find out important facts. Other parts focus on training or specific military operations. This structure helps information flow in many directions. It moves between the commander and the smaller units below them. This ensures everyone has the news they need to act.

In the past, military leaders did most of this work alone. Before the late 1700s, there was very little formal support for staff tasks. Leaders had to handle intelligence and planning by themselves. This was a very hard job for one person. In Austria, leaders realized they needed a "great brain" to help. This helped the commander focus on the big picture. By 1769, Austria had a permanent staff of 30 officers. These officers helped manage the many details of war.

Different countries developed their own ways to organize these groups. Most NATO nations use the Continental Staff System. This system has its roots in the ideas of Napoleon. Other countries use the Commonwealth Staff System from the British military. In Prussia, the military established a central command by 1814. This included a staff for every division and corps. Even the United Kingdom changed its ways after the Crimean War. They formed their own General Staff in 1905 to improve organization.

Today, the staff system helps leaders make much better decisions. A commander uses their personal authority to lead the unit. However, they use the staff to exercise actual control. The staff handles smaller issues so the leader is not distracted. This allows the commander to focus on the most important choices. Senior officers oversee the work to make sure it is accurate. This organized way of working is used by many large armies today. It helps them manage very large and complicated tasks.
