This work helps leaders make smart decisions for their missions. They use data to understand the world around them. This includes studying the land and the people living there. They also look at friendly forces and any hostile forces. Intelligence helps leaders plan for what might happen next.

It is a very important job for many governments.

There are three main levels of intelligence work. Strategic intelligence looks at very big ideas. It studies things like a nation's money or its politics. This helps a country make big plans for its security. Operational intelligence is the next level down. It focuses on planning large campaigns and major operations. Finally, tactical intelligence helps small groups during a battle. This level provides information to patrols on the ground. It helps them know about current threats in their area.

Gathering information is a big part of the job. This is often called the collection phase. Some facts come from public sources like newspapers or books. This is called open-source intelligence. Experts also use high-altitude photos to see things from the sky. They can look at factories or military bases in these pictures. Some countries even use satellites to listen to radio signals. This is part of a system called ECHELON in the U.S. Intelligence services also use maps to keep track of the world.

After the facts are collected, experts must perform analysis. Information is just data until an analyst studies it. Analysts look for gaps in what they already know. They try to find the weak spots in an enemy's plan. For example, they might study how a military gets its fuel. This is a very important part of their supply chain. They also use human intelligence gathered by spies. This can tell them about an opponent's true intentions. However, human intelligence can sometimes be hard to verify.

Once the analysis is done, the information is shared. This is called dissemination. The goal is to give the right facts to the right people. This helps everyone from high leaders to small units. The whole process includes planning, collection, and evaluation. It is a cycle that never really stops. Intelligence work happens during peace and during war. It is a constant way to stay prepared for any situation.
