These leaders are often called the "backbone" of the armed services. This is because they are the most visible leaders for many people. NCOs have very important jobs to do every day. They are responsible for carrying out a military mission. They also train all the personnel so they are ready to work.

NCOs usually earn their rank by being promoted through the enlisted ranks. This is different from commissioned officers. Commissioned officers often enter directly from military academies or officer training schools. Many of these officers also have a post-secondary degree. NCOs can be divided into different classes. Junior NCOs, or JNCOs, have lower ranks like corporals. Senior NCOs, or SNCOs, have higher ranks like sergeants.

Senior NCOs serve as a primary link in the military. They connect the enlisted personnel to the commissioned officers. Their advice and guidance are very important for junior officers. In many cases, they even advise officers of all senior ranks. Their training includes leadership and management skills. They also receive service-specific and combat training. This helps them guide others through hard jobs.

Different countries use many different names for these roles. In Australia, corporals are junior NCOs and sergeants are senior NCOs. In Brazil, they are called "graduado." Canada defines NCOs as members holding the rank of Sergeant or Corporal. In Norway, NCOs are called specialists and they manage training and discipline.

In Singapore, the term NCO is replaced by the word Specialist. In France, they are known as "sous-officier."

Even the way people live can change based on their rank. In Canada, junior NCOs eat and sleep with privates and seamen. This area is often called the junior ranks mess. Senior NCOs eat and sleep with warrant officers instead. Their area is called the warrant officers and sergeants mess. In the navy, it might be called the chiefs and petty officers mess. These rules help keep the military organized and ready.
