Spanish gardens are special outdoor spaces. They can feel very calm and bright. People love them because they offer a cool escape from the sun. Many styles exist in Spain today. Some gardens look like the ones in northern Europe. Others follow styles from Italy or France. In the United States, people often use the term for a formal garden style. These gardens use ideas from many different places. They draw from ancient Persian, Roman, and Islamic garden designs.

One famous way to build a garden is the paradise garden. This style often uses a central cross shape. The garden is divided into four parts by long water channels. These channels are called rills. Water flows through these rills to make a soft sound. The moving water also makes the air feel cool and humid. This is very helpful in the hot Spanish climate. You might find fruit trees and sweet-smelling plants in the garden.

Building these gardens involves many clever tools. Designers use arcades and pergolas to create shade. A pergola is a structure that helps people stay out of the sun. You might also see garden pavilions for resting. Many gardens use colorful ceramic tiles for decoration. These tiles can be used for paving the ground. They can also be used for seating or small water features. This creates a look of simple and clear beauty.

Spain has a very long history of making beautiful gardens. Many different groups helped create these spaces. Immigrants from the Carthaginian and Roman Empires built early gardens. Islamic rulers in the Al-Andalus era made great Moorish gardens. These were often called riyads. One famous example is the Generalife in Granada. Later, Catholic monarchs built gardens during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso is a famous example.

Today, many different people design Spanish gardens. Architects and artists work together on new projects. They even designed the outdoor spaces for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Some gardens are so special that they are protected. This protection is called a Jardín histórico. This means they are recognized as historic gardens. Many of these places, like the Alhambra, are kept safe for everyone to see. They link the past to our world today.
