A Spanish garden is a specific style of designed landscape. It originated in the historic territory of Spain. This style often uses a formal arrangement of plants and structures. In the United States, the term refers to a design that evokes southern Spain. These gardens draw from many ancient traditions. They incorporate elements from Persian, Roman, and Islamic garden designs. They also use principles from the great Moorish gardens. These Moorish gardens were known as riyads during the Al-Andalus era.

One traditional design is the paradise garden. This layout often follows a central cross axis. This axis points toward the four cardinal directions. Long ponds or water channels divide the space. These channels are called rills or stylized qanats. Water flows through these channels to create a specific sensory experience. The moving water reflects light and creates soft sounds. It also increases humidity and provides a refreshing coolness. This design is very useful for the hot Spanish climate.

Designers use specific tools to manage the heat and sun. They build arcades and pergolas to provide shade. A pergola is a structure that supports climbing plants. They also use trellising and garden pavilions for rest. Fragrant plants and fruit trees often fill the quadrants of the garden. Ceramic elements are also a major part of the design. Designers use colorful tiles for water features and paving. These tiles also decorate seating and other structural elements. This use of ceramics often results in a feeling of symmetrical simplicity.

Spain has a very long history of garden construction. Early gardens were made by immigrants from the Carthaginian and Roman Empires. The Palmeral of Elche in Alicante is an example from this era. Later, Islamic rulers in Al-Andalus created beautiful Moorish gardens. The Alhambra and the Generalife in Granada are famous examples. After the Reconquista, Mudéjar artisans continued these traditions. The Alcázar of Seville is a notable site from this period.

Different eras brought new styles to the Spanish landscape. During the Renaissance, Gothic, and Baroque periods, Catholic monarchs built gardens. The Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso is a famous example. During the Romantic and Modern periods, landowning dynasties created gardens. Park Güell is a well-known site from this time. In more recent history, civic projects have shaped public spaces. The Maria Luisa Park and Plaza de España in Seville are examples.

Modern Spanish gardens vary based on local climate. Rainfall and altitude change how gardens look in different regions. In cities, many people live in apartments. These homes often have small paved patios instead of large yards. Most "full" gardens are found in the countryside or large urban houses. Some modern suburban developments now use styles from North America or northern Europe. In the 21st century, many professionals design these spaces. Landscape architects, horticulturalists, and artists work together on new projects.

Many historic gardens are now officially protected. This protection is called a Jardín histórico, or historic garden. This status helps preserve the heritage of these sites. Recent large-scale projects include the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Designers created the public outdoor spaces for the Olympic village. They also designed the spaces for the Universal Exposition of Seville Expo '92. These projects show how modern design connects to the long history of Spanish landscapes.
