life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The silver carp is a fish from Asia.

Hypophthalmichthys molitrix
Hypophthalmichthys molitrix

It lives in fresh water like rivers and lakes. These fish are known for a special way of eating. They are filter feeders. This means they use a filter to catch food. They have parts in their gills that act like a sponge. A part of their body makes a sticky liquid called mucus. This helps trap tiny bits of food. They do not have stomachs. Because of this, they must eat almost all the time. They mostly eat phytoplankton. These are tiny plants that float in the water.

In North America, these fish can be a problem. They are an invasive species. This means they moved to a new place and cause trouble. They can take food away from native fish. Silver carp can also jump very high when they are startled.

Some people call them flying fish. This jumping can be dangerous for people in fast boats. People use many ways to try to stop them. Some use sound, light, and bubbles to make a fence. Others use electricity or carbon dioxide.
