These fish live in fresh water like rivers and lakes. They are native to China and eastern Siberia. In China, they are one of the four famous domestic fish. People have farmed them for a very long time. By weight, they are one of the most produced fish in the world. This is because they are very good at living in farms. They are often raised together with other types of carp.

These fish have a very interesting way of eating. They are filter feeders, which means they strain food from the water. They do not have stomachs to hold food. Because of this, they must eat almost all the time. They use a strong pump to push water through their gills. Inside the gills, they have a sponge-like filter. A special part of their body also makes a sticky mucus. This mucus helps trap tiny particles like phytoplankton and zooplankton.

Silver carp have traveled far from their original homes. They have been introduced to at least 88 different countries. People often moved them to help with water quality or farming. In North America, they were brought in during the 1970s. They were meant to control algae in wastewater facilities. However, they escaped into the wild very quickly. Now, they are considered an invasive species in many places. They can compete with native fish for food.

In the United States, these fish are found in many large rivers. They live in the Mississippi, Illinois, and Ohio Rivers. They have spread from Louisiana all the way to Illinois. They can even be found in the Tennessee River. Because they are invasive, people try to stop them. Some use a bioacoustics fish fence made of sound and light. Others use electricity or carbon dioxide to block their path. Dams also help slow their movement upstream.

One thing that makes silver carp famous is how they move. They are often called "flying" carp because they leap from the water. This happens when they get startled. In North America, they can jump very high into the air. This can be dangerous for people in fast boats. It can even cause injuries to people on water skis. Scientists are not exactly sure why they jump so much here. They do not jump this much in their native Asian homes.
