A silo is a large structure built to store bulk materials.

These structures are very important for keeping supplies safe and dry. Farmers use them to store grain or fermented feed called silage.

Other industries use silos to hold coal, cement, woodchips, or sawdust. Without these storage tools, extra crops might be lost during huge harvests. Silos help move goods by protecting them until they can go by train or truck.

There are many different ways a silo can work.

Tower silos are tall, round buildings made of steel, wood, or concrete. Some concrete versions use small blocks with grooves that lock together. Steel hoops wrap around these towers to keep them tight and strong. These hoops are spaced far apart at the top. They sit much closer together at the bottom. This is because the heavy material inside pushes harder against the base.

Some specialized silos are built to keep air away from the food inside.

Low-oxygen silos use large bags to separate the internal air from the outside. This prevents mold and decay from ruining the fermented feed. These bags actually seem to breathe with the weather. When the sun warms the silo, the gas inside expands. This causes the bags to "breathe out" and collapse. At night, the air shrinks and the bags "breathe in" again.

Other types of storage are much simpler or shaped differently.

Bunker silos are long trenches with concrete walls that are filled by tractors. They use a plastic tarp to stay airtight. Bag silos are long, heavy plastic tubes that are easy to set up.

Grain bins are usually shorter than towers and hold dry things like cement. Some bins even have a hollow center to let air move through the grain. This helps the grain stay dry after it is harvested.

Humans have been thinking about storage for a very long time.

Ancient Greek vases from 700 to 650 BC were even shaped like grain silos. Today, we use advanced materials like polyethylene plastic for small grain bins.

We also use massive concrete structures for cement. Some cement silos are mobile and can hold 750 tons of powder. These modern tools help feed and build the world around us.
