The weather in Shirakawa is very special because of the snow. It has four distinct seasons every year. Winter is the most famous season for this village. Shirakawa is one of the snowiest places in all of Japan. Snowbanks can grow to be more than 2 meters tall. Because the snow is so heavy, people built unique homes. These are called gasshō-zukuri houses. They have very thick roofs made of thatch.

The history of this area goes back a long time. It was once part of the traditional Hida Province. In 1897, the modern village of Shirakawa was officially formed. For many years, the people here focused on farming. Rice is the only major crop grown in the village. Local farmers even created a special brand called Shirakawa-go Koshihikari. This helped the village become independent in its rice trade.

Today, many people visit Shirakawa to see its beautiful scenery.
