geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Shirakawa is a small village in Gifu, Japan.

It sits in a land of big mountains. Most of the land is covered in thick forests. The Shō River flows through the valley. Most people live near this river.

This place is very snowy. In winter, snowbanks can grow over 2 meters tall. Because of the heavy snow, people built special houses. These are called gasshō-zukuri houses. They have very thick, thatched roofs.
