It is made of about 260 tiny islands called shima. These islands are covered in green pine trees, which are called matsu in Japanese. This is how the name Matsushima was made. Many people believe this place is one of the Three Views of Japan.

Poets have written about Matsushima for a very long time. A famous haiku describes the islands as being so beautiful that words fail.

While many think Matsuo Bashō wrote it, an old book from 1820 says a poet named Tawara-bō wrote it. Bashō did visit the area, but his friend Kawai Sora wrote the haiku about it. People have loved these views for many years. This history makes the islands feel even more special to travelers.

Getting to Matsushima is quite easy for visitors. The town is only about 14 km from Sendai, the capital city.

You can reach it by train in about thirty minutes. There are two different stations in the town. Matsushima-Kaigan Station is close to the waterfront and Zuigan-ji temple. Matsushima Station is on a separate line on the other side of town. This makes it simple to visit the many nearby cultural sites.

In 2011, a large earthquake and tsunami hit the region.

The islands actually helped protect the area from the big waves. Because the islands were in the way, the town suffered very little damage. The first tsunami was 3.2 metres high, and the second was 3.8 metres. Sadly, three people in Matsushima died during this time. However, electricity and water were back by the spring of 2011.
