A shadoof is a clever tool used to move water.

It helps people lift water from a well or a river onto land. This process is used for irrigation, which means watering crops. Farmers use it to fill ditches, canals, and small basins. The shadoof is very efficient for this hard job. It has been used by people for a very long time. Many cultures have relied on this tool to grow food.

The way it works is quite simple and smart.

First, an upright frame holds a long pole. This pole sits on a pivot point. At one end, a bucket or skin bag hangs down. At the other end, a heavy weight is attached. This weight is called a counterpoise. An operator pushes the bucket down into the water. Then, the heavy weight helps lift the full bucket back up. This makes the lifting motion feel almost effortless.

People have used this technology for thousands of years. One theory says it was invented in Mesopotamia. This was around the time of Sargon of Akkad. We see a picture of a shadoof on a seal from 2200 BCE. The Minoans might have used them between 2100 and 1600 BCE. They also appeared in Egypt after 2000 BCE. Some historians think the Egyptians were the ones who first made them. They found drawings of shadoofs in Thebes from 1250 BCE.

Shadoofs are found in many different parts of the world.

In India and Pakistan, they are common in the Ganges plain. They are also used in many areas of Africa. In Europe, you can find them in Ukraine, Poland, and Germany. In Ukraine, people call it a "well crane" because of its shape. In Hungary, they are called "heron wells." In China, the tool is called a jiégāo. These different names show how far the tool has traveled.

This tool has changed how people live and work. In ancient Egypt, wealthy people used them for beautiful pleasure gardens. For others, the shadoof is essential for farming on large lands. It can help a person lift 39 to 130 liters of water every minute. This allows farmers to work for a long time without resting. It has also helped women take a bigger role in farming. The shadoof is a symbol of teamwork and helping a community grow.
