People have used it since 3000 BCE. It helps farmers move water to their crops. This is called irrigation.

The tool is easy to make. It has an upright frame. A long pole sits on this frame. The pole rests on a pivot point. One end of the pole holds a bucket. The bucket can be made of skin or a basket. The other end holds a heavy weight. This weight is called a counterpoise. It helps balance the pole.

Using it is a simple set of steps. An operator uses their weight to push the bucket down. Then, the heavy weight helps lift the full bucket up. This makes the work feel easy. A person can lift much water without getting too tired.

Shadoofs are used in many places today. They are common in parts of Africa and Asia. They are also used in Europe. In Ukraine, people call it a well crane.
