earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Seven Coloured Earths are a special place in Mauritius.

You can find them in the Chamarel plain. This area is in the Rivière Noire District. The site is a small area of sand dunes. These dunes show seven different colors. They are red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow.

People love to visit this beautiful spot. It is a very famous sight for travelers.

These colorful sands have a very interesting way of working. The different colors settle into separate layers all by themselves. This creates a striped look on the dunes. It looks almost like a painting.

This process is called spontaneous separation. Scientists are still trying to understand why it happens so consistently. The sand settles into these layers on its own. It is a strange and lovely thing to see.

Long ago, the colors began with volcanic rock. This rock is called basalt. Over time, the basalt broke down into clay. Then, a process called total hydrolysis changed the clay into soil.

This new soil is called ferralitic soil. Two main parts in the soil make the colors. Iron makes the red and dark colors. Aluminium makes the blue and purple colors. The colors might come from how the hot rock cooled down. Different cooling speeds may have caused the different shades.

Rain has also helped shape the land. The rain has carved patterns into the hillside. These patterns look like earthen meringue.

This place has been a top tourist spot since the 1960s. Visitors must stay behind a wooden fence. You cannot climb on the dunes. You can only look from observation outposts. Near the site, shops sell small tubes of the colored earth. These are fun things for people to buy.

Nature shows us these patterns in small ways too. You can see this at home with a simple test.

Try mixing handfuls of different colored sands together. If you leave them, they will eventually separate into layers. This is just like the big dunes in Mauritius. The earth has many ways of organizing itself. It is fun to watch these colors find their own paths.
