Seven Coloured Earths

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Seven Coloured Earths are a unique geological formation located in Mauritius. This site sits on the Chamarel plain within the Rivière Noire District. It is found in the southwestern part of the island.

The area consists of small sand dunes. These dunes display a variety of distinct colors. The shades include red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow. This colorful landscape is a major natural wonder. It serves as a prominent tourist attraction for the island.

The colors of the dunes come from a complex chemical process. It began with the decomposition of volcanic rock known as basalt. As the basalt broke down, it turned into clay. This clay then underwent a process called total hydrolysis.

This chemical change transformed the clay into ferralitic soil. The specific colors in this soil depend on certain elements. Iron is responsible for the red and anthracite shades. Aluminium creates the blue and purplish colors. Scientists believe the different shades resulted from how the molten volcanic rock cooled. Different external temperatures likely caused the rock to cool at different rates.

A striking feature of this site is spontaneous separation. This means the different colored sands settle into separate layers on their own.

This process creates a surrealistic, striped appearance across the dunes. While the colors separate naturally, the exact cause is not fully understood. Scientists have not yet clarified why this separation is so consistent. You can actually observe this phenomenon on a much smaller scale. If you mix handfuls of different colored sands, they will eventually separate. They will form a layered spectrum just like the large dunes.

Nature has also acted as a sculptor for this landscape. Since the earth was first exposed, weather has changed its shape. Rainwater has flowed over the hillsides for a long time. This rain has carved beautiful patterns into the soil.

These patterns give the dunes an effect known as earthen meringue. This describes a texture that looks light and patterned. The combination of chemical colors and water erosion creates a very special view. It makes the hills look both solid and delicate at the same time.

The site has a variety of descriptive names. "Seven Coloured Earths" is not an official name, but a descriptive one. People use many different versions of this title. Some call it the "Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths." Others use "Chamarel Coloured Earths" or simply "Coloured Earth." In the French language, it is known as Terres des Sept Couleurs.

These names all point to the same colorful geological marvel.

Tourism has played a large role in the history of the site. The dunes have been a main attraction since the 1960s. Because the dunes are delicate, they are protected by a wooden fence. Visitors are not allowed to climb on the dunes themselves. Instead, people view the scenery from observation outposts along the fence.

This allows many people to see the site without damaging the fragile layers. It ensures the formation stays intact for future generations.

Local businesses have also grown around this natural wonder. In the area surrounding the dunes, you can find curio shops. These shops sell small test-tubes filled with the colored earths.

This allows visitors to take a tiny piece of the phenomenon home. The site connects the study of volcanic geology with the beauty of landscape erosion. It shows how minerals and weather work together to create art. The Seven Coloured Earths remain a fascinating example of how the Earth organizes itself.
