A seminary is a special kind of school for religious study. These institutions are often called theological colleges or divinity schools. Students who attend these schools are known as seminarians. They spend their time studying holy books and deep ideas about faith. Most people go to a seminary to prepare for a job in ministry. Some want to become clergy, such as priests or ministers. Others may want to work in academic fields. The name comes from a word meaning "seed-bed." This creates an image of ideas growing like plants in a garden.

In the Catholic Church, learning at a seminary follows a clear path. There are four main parts to this training. The human part helps students learn to care for themselves and others. The spiritual part helps them build a habit of prayer. The intellectual part involves many academic classes and degrees. Finally, the pastoral part teaches them how to help people in a church.

Catholic students often move through four specific stages. First is the propaedeutic stage, which focuses on prayer and scripture. This can last from one to three years. Next is the discipleship stage, where students begin serious academic work. They might earn a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Philosophy here. The third stage is called configuration. During this time, students focus more on pastoral work and prayer. The final stage is vocational synthesis, when a person is ordained.

Many different groups have their own history with seminaries. Modern Catholic seminaries grew out of reforms after the Council of Trent. In the United States, the oldest Catholic seminary is St. Mary's in Baltimore. It was founded in 1791. Protestant groups also use the term for graduate schools. The oldest Protestant seminary in the U.S. was in Andover, Massachusetts. It started in 1807 and is now part of Yale Divinity School.

Seminaries can be found all over the world. In Rome, many schools train priests from many different countries. The Pontifical North American College trains priests from the United States. Some schools even give out special ecclesiastical degrees. In Texas, the Dallas Theological Seminary is a large non-denominational school. It was started in 1924 by Rollin T. Chafer and his brother. Even the LDS Church uses the word for classes for teenagers. These classes help them prepare for spiritual service.
