These schools teach many different subjects like math or science. They also teach students about their faith and religious traditions. Many of these schools are located near a local church parish. In 2016, the Church supported 95,200 primary schools. It also supported 43,800 secondary schools for older students.

These schools have a very specific goal for their students. They want to help people grow in many different ways. This includes growing in their minds, bodies, and spirits. The Second Vatican Council spoke about this in 1965. They said these schools rely almost entirely on their teachers. In some places, like Victoria in Australia, there are four main rules. These rules focus on identity, faith, celebrating life, and social equality.

Teachers, leaders, and students all work together on these goals.

The history of these schools is full of big changes. In England, things were difficult for Catholics after 1558. They faced many struggles because of new religious laws. Because of this, Catholics built their own schools to keep their traditions alive. Later, new laws in 1782 and 1829 helped them more. These laws allowed the Church to build many helpful places. They built schools, hospitals, and even orphanages.

In North America, Irish immigrants helped start many schools too.

In Canada, the story of these schools is very important. Some schools have been around for a very long time. For example, the Ursulines in Quebec started in 1639.

In Canada, some Catholic schools get money from the government. This is called public funding. This happened because of big debates between different groups of people. In provinces like Ontario and Alberta, these schools are protected by law. This protection helps keep the rights of religious groups safe.

Most Catholic schools are very welcoming to everyone. They usually accept students regardless of their race or nationality. They also accept students of any sex or religion. They want to be places of inclusion for all people.

In the United States, these schools are very large. In 2010, about 2 million students attended these schools. They form the largest non-public Christian school system in the country. These schools help students connect their culture with their faith.
