Theology is the study of religious beliefs from a religious point of view.

It focuses on the nature of divinity and the history of religion. Many people study this as an academic subject in universities. They also study it in places called seminaries. One big idea in theology is revelation. This is the belief that gods are not just far away. Instead, people believe gods can interact with our natural world. They might also choose to show themselves to humans.

How do theologians study these big ideas? They use many different tools to find answers. Some use philosophy to think through difficult questions. Others use history to look at how beliefs changed over time. Some use ethnographic methods to study how people practice their faith. They might even use logic and arguments to test or defend a belief. This can help a person understand their own tradition much better. It can also help them explore the nature of divinity without picking one specific religion.

The word theology has a very old history. It comes from two Greek words. The first is "theos," which means god. The second is "logia," which means sayings or reasoning.

Around 380 BC, the thinker Plato used this term. He wrote about how heavenly bodies might be moved by divine souls. Later, the writer Aristotle included discourse on the divine in his studies. In the 14th century, the word evolved into its current English form. It moved from Greek to Latin, then to French, and finally to English by 1362.

Different traditions use theology in unique ways. In Judaism, theology is often tied to how people live and act. It is linked to rabbinical discussions of law and sacred commentaries. In Christianity, the study often focuses on the Old and New Testaments. A famous thinker named Thomas Aquinas described theology in three parts. He said it involves what God teaches, what teaches of God, and what leads to God.

Scholars like the 4th-century Gregory of Nazianzus were also very important. He was even called "the Theologian" because of his inspired teachings.

Today, theology can be used for many different goals. It can be used to help reform or change a religious tradition. It can also be used to justify or defend a way of life. Some people use it to compare different faiths to see how they are alike. Others might use it to challenge or oppose certain worldviews. It can even help people find ways to interpret the world around them. By looking at symbols and metaphors, theologians help old traditions speak to people living today.
