A seminary is a specialized educational institution focused on theology and scripture. These schools are also known as theological colleges or divinity schools. Students who attend these institutions are called seminarians. Most students enroll to prepare for ordination to serve as clergy. Others study to work in academic fields related to religion. The English word comes from a term meaning "seed-bed." This imagery suggests a place where ideas and faith are nurtured like growing plants.

In the Roman Catholic tradition, seminary formation is a structured process. It follows specific guidelines found in documents like the Code of Canon Law. Modern Catholic seminaries grew from reforms following the Council of Trent. These "Tridentine" seminaries emphasized personal discipline and spiritual formation. The curriculum typically begins with the study of philosophy as a foundation. This is followed by the study of theology, which is considered the final crown of their education.

Catholic seminaries are organized into different types based on age and purpose. Minor seminaries are designed for teenagers. Major seminaries are for adults and include various levels of study. Some major seminaries are for undergraduate college students. Others are post-graduate programs for those who already hold a bachelor's degree. There are even specialized seminaries for older adults who are no longer in school. These institutions are run by religious orders or by specific dioceses.

Catholic formation includes four essential dimensions. The human dimension focuses on self-care and relating to others through etiquette. The spiritual dimension helps students form habits of prayer and liturgy. The intellectual dimension involves academic classes and earning degrees. This often starts with a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Philosophy. The final dimension is the pastoral dimension. This prepares students for life in a parish through topics like bedside manner.

Students move through four distinct stages of Catholic formation. The first is the propaedeutic stage, lasting 12 months to three years. This stage focuses on prayer, scripture, and human development. Next is the discipleship stage, where academic studies begin. Students may pursue a four-year Bachelor of Arts or a two-year Bachelor of Philosophy. The third stage is called configuration. During this time, students receive candidacy and focus on pastoral training. This stage usually lasts three to four years and ends with a master's degree. Finally, the vocational synthesis stage occurs when the student is ordained.

Many unique institutions exist within this field. In Rome, several seminaries educate priests and bishops from around the world. The Pontifical North American College trains priests from the United States. These pontifical seminaries can confer special ecclesiastical degrees. These include the Baccalaureate, Licentiate, and Doctorate of Sacred Theology. The Pontifical College Josephinum in Ohio is the only pontifical seminary located outside of Italy.

Protestant institutions also use the term seminary for independent graduate schools. The oldest Protestant seminary in the United States was founded in 1807. It was the Andover Theological Seminary in Massachusetts. Today, it is part of the Yale Divinity School in Connecticut. Another notable example is the Dallas Theological Seminary, founded in 1924. It was started by Rollin T. Chafer, his brother Lewis, and William Henry Griffith Thomas. It is currently the largest non-denominational seminary accredited by the Association of Theological Schools.

The term "seminary" can also be used in other ways. In some countries, it refers to secular schools that train teachers. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints uses the term for high school classes. These classes are for students ages 14 to 18. Unlike other contexts, these are not higher education programs for careers. Instead, they help prepare teenagers for spiritual service within the church. This shows how one word can describe many different types of learning.
