Semibatch reactor

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A semibatch reactor is a special tank used to make things.

It works like a batch reactor. A batch reactor is a tank filled with ingredients at the start. In a semibatch reactor, you can add more ingredients as you go. You can also take products out while the work happens.

These tanks use a stirrer to mix everything. This helps keep the heat and the mix the same everywhere. This is very useful for exothermic reactions. These are reactions that give off heat. Adding ingredients slowly helps control that heat. This keeps the tank at a safe temperature.

Semibatch reactors also help with selectivity. Selectivity is how well a reaction makes the right thing. Sometimes a reaction makes a good product and a bad one. By adding ingredients slowly, you can keep the mix just right. This helps make more of the good stuff.

These tanks are great for small amounts of work. They cost less to build than some other big tanks. But they can cost more if you try to make too much at once. This is because workers must fill and clean them often.
