Scurvy

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Scurvy is a serious illness caused by a lack of vitamin C. This vitamin is essential for many things happening inside the human body. It helps make building blocks like collagen, carnitine, and catecholamines. Collagen is a protein that keeps our skin, bones, and blood vessels strong. Without enough vitamin C, these parts of the body can become weak or break. It usually takes at least one month without this vitamin for symptoms to appear.

The way scurvy works starts with a lack of energy. When the body lacks vitamin C, it cannot make enough carnitine or catecholamines. These are needed to turn food into energy called ATP. Without enough energy, people feel very tired or weak. As the sickness continues, the body cannot make strong collagen. This causes blood vessels to become fragile and leak. This leads to easy bruising, bleeding skin, and even loose teeth.

People have known about scurvy for a very long time. Descriptions of the sickness date back to ancient Egypt around 1550 BC. The famous Greek physician Hippocrates wrote about it too. In the later Age of Sail, scurvy was a huge problem for sailors. Many long sea voyages did not have fresh fruits or vegetables. It was often assumed that 50 percent of sailors would die from it.

There are many foods that can prevent scurvy with their high vitamin C. Red bell peppers have about 200 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams. Guava has 184 mg, and blackcurrants have 181 mg. Citrus fruits like oranges and lemons have about 53 mg. Even vegetables like broccoli and cabbage are good sources. Cooking food can sometimes decrease the amount of vitamin C left inside. Taking vitamin C supplements can also help people get better quickly.

Today, scurvy is much rarer than it was in the past. It mostly happens to people who do not get enough variety in their diet. This can include people living in areas with food shortages or refugees. Some people in industrialized nations might get it from poor dietary choices. You can think of vitamin C like the glue in a house. Without the glue, the walls and floors cannot stay together. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables provides the glue our bodies need.
