Scurvy

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Scurvy is a sickness caused by a lack of vitamin C. Our bodies cannot make this vitamin on their own. We must get it from the foods we eat.

Vitamin C helps make collagen. Collagen is a protein that acts like a building block. It holds our skin, bones, and blood vessels together. Without it, our bodies cannot stay strong.

Early signs of scurvy include feeling very tired or weak. As it gets worse, gums can become sore. Teeth may even become loose. People might also see easy bruising or bleeding on their skin. In the past, this was a big problem for sailors. They were at sea for a long time without fresh food. Some voyages lost half of their crew to this disease.

Luckily, scurvy is easy to treat. Eating foods with vitamin C helps people get well. Raw citrus fruits like oranges and lemons are great. Red peppers, broccoli, and tomatoes also help. Most people feel better in just a few weeks.
