There are different ways beriberi affects the body. Dry beriberi affects the nerves. This can cause numbness in the hands and feet. It can also cause pain or trouble walking. Some people may feel confused.

Wet beriberi affects the heart and blood. It can make the heart beat very fast. It can also cause legs to swell up. This is called edema.

Babies can also get sick. This is called infantile beriberi. It can happen if a mother does not eat enough thiamine. Babies may lose weight or feel very ill.

Some people are at higher risk. Eating mostly white rice can cause it. Alcoholism can also lead to low thiamine. In rare cases, a person's genes may make it hard to use thiamine.

Doctors can test for this. They look at symptoms or check blood and urine. Most people feel better after taking thiamine. They can take it by mouth or by injection.
