Rickets is a condition that makes bones weak or soft in children.

It can cause many different changes to a child's body. Some children might have bowed legs or thick wrists and ankles. Others may have a large forehead or a curved spine. It can even cause bone pain or trouble sleeping. This condition is very important to understand because it affects how children grow.

To understand how it works, we look at how bones get hard. The body needs a process called calcification to make bones strong. This happens when the body uses calcium and phosphorus to build bone. Vitamin D is the key helper for this job. Sunlight helps skin cells turn vitamin D into an active state. Without enough vitamin D, the body cannot absorb calcium properly. This leads to bones that are too soft to hold their shape.

People have known about rickets for a very long time. Descriptions of the disease go back to the 1st century AD. It was a very common problem in the Roman Empire. Later, it was a major issue in London during the Industrial Revolution. Thick fog and smog from factories blocked the sunlight. In the 19th century, studies in Boston and Leiden showed many children had it. Some people even called it "the English Disease" because it was so widespread.

Doctors use specific tools to find rickets in a patient.

They often start with blood tests. These tests look for low calcium or low phosphorus levels. They also check for a high level of alkaline phosphatase. Doctors also use X-rays to see the bones clearly.

An X-ray might show wide or cupped bone ends. This is especially common in places where bones grow fast, like the knees or wrists.

We can prevent rickets by getting enough vitamin D and calcium. You can get vitamin D from the sun or from certain foods. Good food choices include eggs, fish, and milk with added vitamins. Oily fish like salmon and tuna are also great sources.

For babies who only drink breast milk, doctors may suggest vitamin D supplements. If a child is diagnosed, treatment usually involves taking vitamin D and calcium. This often helps the bones improve within just a few weeks.
