Osteoporosis is a condition that affects the whole skeletal system. The name comes from Greek words meaning "porous bones." It happens when bones lose their mass and become very thin. This makes the tiny structures inside the bone break down. Because of this, bones become more fragile. People with this condition face a much higher risk of breaking a bone.

Our bones are constantly changing through a way it works called remodeling. Two special types of cells manage this job. First, cells called osteoclasts remove old bone tissue. Next, cells called osteoblasts build new bone. In a healthy body, these two tasks stay in balance. However, with osteoporosis, the removal of bone happens faster than the building of new bone. This causes the bone to lose its density.

Doctors have studied how this happens for a long time. They know that bone density usually peaks around age 30. As people get older, the risk of bone loss goes up. It is very common in the elderly. For example, about 15% of Caucasians in their 50s have it. By the time people reach age 80, about 70% are affected. Women are often at a higher risk than men.

Many different factors can lead to weak bones. In women, low levels of estrogen after menopause can cause rapid bone loss. In men, lower levels of testosterone can have a similar effect. Other things like smoking or drinking too much alcohol can increase the risk. Some medicines for seizures or cancer also speed up bone loss. Doctors often use a test called a DXA scan to measure bone density. This helps them see if a person is 2.5 standard deviations below a young adult.

Osteoporosis is often called a silent condition. Most people have no symptoms at all. You might not even know your bones are weak until one breaks. These are called fragility fractures because they happen from minor stress. A person might break a bone just from coughing, bending, or a small trip. Common breaks happen in the wrist, spine, hip, or shoulder.
