This school has a very long and interesting history. A man named Émile Boutmy started it in 1872.

He wanted to help train a new group of French leaders. At that time, France was going through many difficult changes. The school began as a private institution called the École libre des sciences politiques. It was a pioneer for political science in France. Later, after World War II ended, the school became a public institution. This change helped it grow in new ways.

Many important people have studied at Sciences Po over the years. From 1901 to 1935, most people entering the top French civil service studied there. This was a very large number of people. In the past, the school mostly taught political science. But leaders like Richard Descoings changed that. He added more subjects like sociology and economics. He also wanted students to learn many languages. He even made it a rule to spend one year studying in another country.

Today, Sciences Po is still a very busy place for learning. It helps many different kinds of students succeed. In 2001, the school started an Equal Opportunity Program. This program helps students who might have a hard time paying for school. Because of this, about 30% of students now get some kind of scholarship. This makes the school more fair for everyone. By 2021, 80% of graduates found jobs in the private sector. This shows how much people value what they learn at Sciences Po.
