The story of the Sorbonne began a long time ago. In 1257, a man named Robert de Sorbon started a college. He was a chaplain to King Louis IX. He wanted to help poor students who wanted to become doctors. This old college was part of the University of Paris. Later, in 1793, the college was closed for a while. In 2018, two large universities joined together to form the modern Sorbonne University. This new version was created by merging Paris-Sorbonne University and the Université Pierre et Marie Curie.

Many very smart people have been part of this school's history. Marie Curie came from Poland to study here in 1891. She became the first woman to be a professor at the Sorbonne. She and her husband, Pierre Curie, helped found the science faculty. Since then, many people from this university have won big awards. As of 2021, they have won 33 Nobel Prizes. They have also won six Fields Medals and one Turing Award.

Today, the university has several different places where students work. The historic campus is in the Latin Quarter of Paris. It has a beautiful building with a chapel and a large courtyard. The largest campus is the Jussieu Campus.
