It was a leading place for learning for hundreds of years. The school started around the year 1150. At first, it was a group of teachers and students. They worked near a big cathedral school.

This school was known as the second-oldest university in Europe. It became a very important part of how people learn today. It helped start new traditions like getting a doctoral degree.

Learning at the university followed a specific path.

Students first studied in the Faculty of Arts. This was the largest group of students. They had to finish these studies before moving to higher subjects. The higher subjects included law, medicine, and theology. Theology is the study of religion. Students also learned many arts. These included grammar, music, and even astronomy. They spent many years working hard to finish their courses.

Many important people helped build the university's history.

King Philip II gave the school an official charter in 1200. This made the school an official group. Later, Pope Innocent III recognized the school in 1215. A man named Robert de Sorbon founded a famous college around 1257. This place was called the College of Sorbonne. It was so important that the university is often named after it. Many kings and popes studied there too.

Students came from many different places to study in Paris.

They organized themselves into four groups called nations. These groups were based on where a student was from. The nations were France, Normandy, Picardy, and England. The English nation even included students from Scandinavia. Students often wore special robes to show their status. They also followed the rules of the Church. This helped protect them while they lived in the city.

During the French Revolution in 1793, the school was closed. The buildings and money were sold for a short time. A new version of the university opened in 1896. This new school was started by French president Félix Faure. In 1970, the university was divided into 13 smaller schools. Many of these schools, like Sorbonne University, still teach students today. They keep the long history of Paris alive.
