society Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The University of Paris was a premier center of higher learning located in France. It served as a leading academic institution from approximately 1150 until 1970. This long history includes a brief closure during the French Revolution between 1793 and 1806. The university emerged as a corporation of students and teachers. It was closely associated with the existing cathedral schools of Paris. Many historians consider it the second-oldest university in Europe.

The university functioned through a structured system of faculties and student organizations. Students began their education in the Faculty of Arts, which was the largest group. This faculty provided the foundational studies required for all other paths. After completing these courses, students could move to higher faculties. These specialized departments included Medicine, Law, and Theology.

The academic curriculum was divided into two main parts. The first part was the trivium and quadrivium, which covered subjects like grammar, rhetoric, arithmetic, and astronomy. The second part involved higher instruction in dogmatic theology and Canon law.

To organize themselves, students were divided into four distinct groups called nations. These nations were based on a student's regional origin or language. The four groups were France, Normandy, Picardy, and England. The English nation was quite broad and included students from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.

This nation system provided a way for students to find community. It also became a model for many later medieval universities across Europe. Students often wore robes and practiced the tonsure, a way of shaving the head. This signified they were under the protection of the Church.

The history of the university is marked by official recognition from powerful leaders. In 1200, King Philip II issued an edict that formally recognized the corporation as an "Universitas." This charter allowed the institution to operate under ecclesiastic law. Later, in 1215, Pope Innocent III provided further official recognition.

A very famous part of the university was the College of Sorbonne. This college was founded by Robert de Sorbon around 1257. It was chartered by King Louis IX. Because of its importance, the university is often nicknamed after this specific college.

Many significant historical figures were educated within these walls. The university attracted scholars from every country due to its high reputation. Notable students included several popes, such as Innocent III and Adrian IV. It also educated royalty and famous intellectuals. The institution was so respected that chroniclers called Paris the "city of letters par excellence." They claimed that philosophy and learning flourished there more than in Athens or Rome.

The university faced major changes during the late 18th and 19th centuries. During the French Revolution in 1793, the university was closed. The Revolutionary Convention sold the college buildings and their endowments. In 1806, a new University of France was established with several independent faculties. These included Humanities, Law, Science, Medicine, and Theology.

In 1896, a re-founded University of Paris was inaugurated by President Félix Faure. This new version grouped together several different faculties and schools.

In 1970, the university underwent its most recent major transformation. Following the civil unrest of May 1968, the single large institution was divided. It was split into 13 autonomous universities. These modern institutions include Sorbonne University, Panthéon-Sorbonne University, and Paris Cité University.

While the structure changed, the heritage remains. The Chancellerie des Universités de Paris has managed many of the university's historical assets. This includes the famous Sorbonne building and the "La Sorbonne" brand name. The legacy of the medieval corporation continues through these many separate schools today.
